New Year’s SEO Resolution?

By Benj Arriola - Posted on Wed Jan 3, 2007

I guess it is the start of another year and another year of New Year’s Resolutions, where we will either keep them or break them. Anyway, these resolutions should serve as guides and not as laws for a better 2007 compared to 2006. Most resolutions are based on things we want to improve on the past year. And based on my 2006, here are my New Year’s SEO Resolution.

  • Do not even concentrate much on SEO alone. Internet Marketing encompasses a wide range of mediums on how to really sell well online. Although doing them all right away can be overwhelming, and plan to concentrate on building my opt-in list for email marketing. I will prioritize this more than working on PPC but I also plan to concentrate on PPC sometime at the middle of 2007.
  • Optimize my PPC publisher ads better, and create good landing pages for my affiliate marketing.
  • Learn more of rich media and social networks and social bookmarking and how this can be utilized well for Internet marketing efforts effectively.
  • Run reports more often and observe them well and make necessary adjustments.
  • Fix my legal stuff to be more legal-proof. And to optimize my taxes even more with my SEO business.
  • Build my web design and development team and complete my training materials.
  • Build more networks with SEO copywriters.
  • Will not concentrate on production work and will build a good outsource team if needed. And will concentrate on project management, billings, customer support. I will not even concentrate on sales first. I need to fix my systems first and getting more clients will make everything more confusing.
  • And lastly is to not work that much and have fun away from SEO, go back to the gym, get in shape, go back to the Taekwondo studio, and when endurance is back up, go back to the MMA gym.

So far business has been good for 2006 with more than 300+ domains registered through my own domain registration business. About 280+ of those also availed my web hosting services. About 50+ of the 280 are out web design/web development clients where about 10 of those 50 are SEO clients as well. For 2007, I will not actively try to increase these numbers, but will simply fix all my operation systems and might be using a good CRM software as well.

After the SEO Contest Ituloy AngSulong, I will be changing URLs for better recall and branding. With my 2006 earnings on Google Adsense has also taught me some lessons valuable for better implementation in 2007.

Wow, you might consider passing to us spilled projects… :)

Some very good resolutions there, some cross over with my own new year resolutions for website owners.

You’re spot on when you say there is more to marketing that SE positions; word of mouth, both on and offline, can be just as effective if not more so than SE referrals.

Yes, social media is another form of sem if you ask me. Sounds like you have a good idea of optimizing your current clients and not chasing so many new ones. Remember a bird in hand is worth two in the bush. Good luck with your resolutions.

[...] As I mentioned my 2007 SEO New Years Resolution in my SEO blog, I basically said I will not concentrate on sales and rather on building up my business process systems. As growth happens, and adding in more clients without a good foundation just makes things more complicated. I am no business management major and started a career first as a Chemist. And even it I have been running a business since 1997, I still consider myself a business newbie. Since 1997 and the line of services have grown from plain web design to domain name registrations, web hosting, web design and development and internet marketing where my clients now include 400+ domain name registration clients, 280+ web hosting clients, 50+ web design and development clients and 5+ internet marketing clients through SEO. Something that I believe is not impressive at all considering I still have a job and have been doing this for quite some time. Unfortunately, with the large amount of competition, prices cannot be brought up that high to a level where I would decide to live on my business alone. I still work and is still dependent on working for the man. But with the amount of clients, adding more is just confusing. Thus this is where I am dedicating my 2007 to my business processes. [...]
